How to teach your kids to fall in love with English Speaking.

Did you know if you speak English, you can communicate with 20% of the people on Earth?

Well, that is roughly 1.5 billion people!

What if you could give your kids such amazing communication opportunities?

Not only would this help them develop confidence, but it will also help them get better job avenues and even help them with higher education.

However, speaking English doesn’t come easy. It is difficult for us to converse in English, and it is even more difficult for children.

Even good English medium schools fail to provide the right atmosphere to children. So, how can this issue be solved?

A possible solution is to enroll your kids in a spoken English course. While this will help, to a large extent, you must indulge your kids in fun activities. This will help them enjoy the process and fall in love with learning English.

Without further ado, let us look at some tips on teaching your kids English and making the whole process enjoyable.

1. Start Early

Well, it goes without saying, “Early bird catches the worm.”

Teaching your kids English is a gift that they will take with them into adulthood.

Interestingly, teaching kids English is easier than ever before. With a plethora of English resources, English speaking classes, and fun games, you can make English learning a routine in your family.

Now, all this sounds interesting. But, how can you realize it in practice? With varying attention spans, it can become difficult for you to teach children English. So, how about allotting a particular time slot for it?

Well, you can fix a schedule and give it a name like “English Time.” All you need to make sure of is that you spend this time on English activities, lessons.

This will be the daily time that you spend on English activities, lessons, or speaking together in English.

It is important to note that younger children have shorter attention spans. You can start with 10 to 15 minutes per session. As they grow older, you can increase the time as you can hold their attention better.

Well, a word of advice is to stick to your routine but be flexible too. Quite often, your child’s mood and energy level may not allow them to learn as effectively as you would want them to.

Let your child’s mood and energy levels guide you. It is perfectly alright to reschedule “English time” and even take a break.

2. Pick Topics That Interest Your Kid

Just like we adults have different choices regarding discussions and debates, it is the same for children.

To get your child excited about speaking English, make an effort to take them through topics that they’re already interested in.

Now, how can you plan this?

Begin by noticing your child’s interests. You will soon learn about the games, songs, or activities that will motivate them to learn.

Maybe your kid is into action games, and perhaps they love dogs. So, the idea is to find something relatable and let them pick up the vocabulary.

Since you’re working on a topic that your child cares about, it’ll be a lot harder for them to get bored!

Once you feel that they have mastered it, you can provide them with topics and let them speak on them. Not only will this build their confidence, but it will also help them talk easily with their peers and give better output at school.

3. Don’t Obsess over Grammar

When you hear your child using incorrect grammar, what should you do? Should you correct them every time?

I suggest that you should let go of small mistakes and allow them to speak and express themselves freely.

That doesn’t mean you should never correct them.

You can and you should sometimes. However, focusing on their mistakes will make them lose their interest soon and discourage them from speaking English.

Be patient with them, even if they forget what you’ve taught them or keep making the same mistakes. Children learn best through repetition. When you repeat a word or grammar structure often, they will learn it the right way.

Make it a point to take your child on nature walks. You can help them admire the beauty around them and even help them learn new words. Now, how is this possible?

When you show them a butterfly or a beautiful flower, it will generate curiosity to know more about them and allow you to discuss more new vocabulary.

Such learning will make English seem more relevant to kids, and they will practice English in a relaxed and fun environment.

To take your learning and play to the next level, you can even consider joining English speaking classes with your child!

When your child sees your enthusiasm and thirst for learning, he/she is likely to reciprocate the same.
